George Washington Thanksgiving Proclamation (1789)

Happy Thanksgiving.  Too bad we don't hear political leaders say things like this anymore.

Thanksgiving Proclamation
President George Washington
City of New York, October 3, 1789

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the People, by constantly being a government of wise, just and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

The Offering of Issac: A Type of Christ

The New Testament is in the Old Testament Concealed, and the Old Testament is in the New Testament Revealed

The story of God telling Abraham to sacrifice his son always seemed odd to me and a little disturbing.  I wish they would have told me in Sunday school that this story was a foreshadowing of what was to come, when another father, God the Father, would sacrifice His Son, Jesus the Messiah.  The fact that this story seems so odd, and it is not the type of story you would tell if you were just making up a religion and trying to get people to follow it, and that this crazy story has so many parallels with the greatest story of all time is one of the most convincing arguments for taking the Bible seriously.  This is an amazing Bible type that foreshadows our Lord's death on the cross 2,000 some years in advance.  Please watch the ten minute video of Chuck Missler discussing some of the parallels between the offering of Isaac and our Lord's sacrifice on the cross.  Also see a list of parallels below with Bible passages.  This is the type of information that we should be teaching our children to help strengthen their faith at a young age.

Bible verses about Abraham and Isaac are in white            Bible verses about Jesus are in orange

1.  Both had miraculous births:

Genesis 18:10-11  ...Sarah your wife shall have a son. (Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.) Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.

Luke 1:34-35   Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?"  And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

2. Both were the only and beloved son of their fathers:

Genesis 22:2  Then He said, "Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

John 3:16   For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

and

Luke 3:21-22   When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened.  And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am will pleased."

3.  Both were sacrificed on Mount Moriah (Abraham ended up naming Mount Moriah in Genesis 22:14 which means The-Lord-Will-Provide):

Genesis 22:2   Then He said, "Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

2 Chronicles 3:1  Now Solomon began to build the house of the Lord at Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord  had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Jesus was crucified in Jerusalem which was located on Mount Moriah.

4.  Both Isaac and Jesus were considered dead for three days:

Genesis 22: 3-4   So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.  Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.

Matthew 12:40   For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

God instructed Abraham to offer up Isaac as a burnt offering.  Due to Abraham's faith and obedience to God, Isaac was “as good as dead” in his mind.  When God told Abraham not to lay a hand on Isaac three days later, it was like Isaac was brought back from the dead.

5.  Faith in a future resurrection:

Genesis 22:5  And Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you."

John 2:19-22   Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."  Then the Jews said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?"  But He was speaking of the temple of His body.  There for, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said

Jesus obviously knew that he would be resurrected after his death on the cross, and the author of Hebrews 11:17-19 (see verse below)  points out that Abraham also had faith that Isaac would resurrected. If God wanted him to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham believed that God would somehow resurrect Isaac so that God could fulfill His earlier promise to Abraham in Genesis 21:12 (see verse below)

Hebrews 11:17-19   By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called," concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in figurative sense.

Genesis 21:12   But God said to Abraham, "Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman.  Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called.

6.  Both carried the wood for their own sacrifice:

Genesis 22:6   So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together.

John 19:16-17   Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus and led Him away.  And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with him, one of either side, and Jesus in the center.

7.  God will provide the Lamb for an offering:

Genesis 22: 7-8   But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "My father!"  And he said, "Here I am, my son."  Then he said, "Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?"  And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering." So the two of them went together.

John 1:36  And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!"

The ram and the Passover lamb were foreshadowing Jesus, the Lamb of God.  God provided the ram to take the place of Isaac, and God also provided Himself/Jesus as a sacrifice for our sins.  He died so we may have life.  Notice how both Jesus and the ram were a substitutionary offering.

8.  Both were bound:

Genesis 22:9   Then they came to the place of which God had told him.  And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.

John 18:12   Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.

9.  The ram in the thickets and the crown of thorns:

Genesis 22:13   Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns, So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

Matthew 27:29   When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand.  And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

Thorns and thistles were mention after the Adam and Eve disobeyed God (Genesis 3:18) and are thought to be a symbol of sin.  Jesus' crown of thorns is a symbol Jesus wearing the sins of the world, and the ram being caught in the thickets by his horns (head) may be a foreshadowing of Jesus' crown of thorns.

10.  In your seed all the nations will be blessed:

Genesis 22:18  In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."

Matthew 1:1  The book of Genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:

All the nations of the earth have been blessed by Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, and Jesus is a descendant of Abraham.

What's In The Bible DVD Series

Phil Vischer, the creator of Veggie Tales, has created a new Christian DVD series that teaches children (and parents) about the Bible.  My family has purchased the first couple of DVDs and we really enjoy them.  My son enjoys the characters and loves the songs all while learning about the Bible.  I have actually learned a lot myself, and have even watched the DVDs when the kids aren't around.  These are probably best for children ages 3 and up.  Check out the trailer below.

A father's ultimate job is to introduce his children to their real Father

The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother
